Care Runs Both Directions

Jeremy Showalter3 min read
An older man smiles across a kitchen counter at a younger woman, both holding coffee mugs, with a bowl of muffins between them.

The same intentionality that lets one spouse carry on lets an adult child step in for an aging parent, and lets a parent get ready for that child to help.

You may see it coming before you are ready for it. A parent asks the same question twice on one phone call. A bill sits unopened. And underneath it runs the math you try not to do. One of them will likely be on their own someday, and the one left may be the one who never handled any of this. If that day arrived this year, would your mother know what your father knew? Would you?

This is the same problem that led us to build Vigil Protocol, one generation up. A household carried mostly by one person. A complete financial picture that lives in a single head, in a drawer, in an inbox. It works for decades, right up until the moment it must move to someone else.

The test we use for a spouse becomes the test for an adult child. Could someone who has never seen these accounts act correctly on the first day they have to? Vigil maps where to look, never how to get in. Your parent decides what you can see and when, and the picture opens in stages as the need becomes real.

Your parents have their own side of this. Getting ready for an adult child to help is itself an act of care. It lets a parent choose which child takes which role, what that child can see today, and what stays sealed until the day it is truly needed. It spares the people they love a frantic search through a filing cabinet during the hardest week of their lives. The same intentionality will be yours to set up when your time comes.

The sharpest version of this is the moment there is one parent. The picture should already be shared and already current before then, so the surviving spouse and the adult child step into something built and true. They continue a plan instead of reconstructing one from memory.

It is one system, serving the same family from two sides. One map, built together. One set of roles, assigned on purpose. One runbook that opens in stages, for whoever needs it, at the moment they need it. One place to download your documents. One list of the attorney, the CPA, and the professionals you already trust, ready when you need them.

And it stays in your hands the whole way. You decide who holds which role and what each person sees, and you change it as life does.

Care runs both directions. You are getting ready to help the parents who raised you, and helping them get ready for the day they need you. Nothing breaks if you are gone tomorrow, and nothing is lost when you need to step in. That is the promise, from one generation to the next.
